AOL Switches AIM Express to Flash
Nomadic IM addicts rejoice: AOL just released a new version of AIM Express, its instant messaging client that doesn’t need to be installed on a computer. The new Flash-based version adds many features that were formerly exclusive to the clunky downloadable AIM.
By switching to Flash, developers were able to enable tabbed conversations, status messages that stick whether or not the user is online, a mode that allows users to send outgoing text messages instead of IMs, and even a “buddy rollover” that shows a user&rsqu

Kobalt Powered Stainless Steel Tool Chest

August 22nd, 2008

Kobalt Tools must have ripped a page straight from a Home Improvement TV show script when they designed the flagship of their cleverly designed tool line, the 53-inch stainless steel tool chest. Much like Tim Taylor’s completely over-the-top renovations that featured gadgets and amenities popping out of every nook and cranny, the Kobalt tool chest has been outfitted with an array of outrageous add-ons that will likely make it the envy of every nosy neighbor and tech-minded mechanic.
As the Tool Man himself would probably say, there’s only one trait that makes a tool chest worthy of that kind of admiration. Power. 120 volts, to be exact. The Kobalt tool chest uses a connection to a standard wall outlet to powe

Game While you Work Out

August 21st, 2008

I play way too many computer games with the problem being that I do not get enough exercise. I’ve found running with a hand-held game system rather dangerous in that you tend to run into things and have a higher probability of something running into you (sarcastically). I understand a lot of folks are having similar problems trying to run or walk while using a smart phone as well.
What I wanted was something that allowed me to game for hours, do some work if I needed to, and lose weight. I ran into a piece on a Mayo clinic research report which said working, or playing, using a treadmill could do wonderful things for your health and fitness.

MSI Wind U100

August 21st, 2008
MSI Wind U100

It’s been almost a year since the original Asus Eee 701 appeared stateside, making traditional ultra-portables look fat with its size and weight, sending prices plunging with its $400 price tag, and triggering a landslide of imitators. In that time, many have tried, but few have succeeded in one upping Asus at its own game. The Wind is MSI’s freshman effort in the emerging subnotebook genre, but the company has managed to run with the best of them by offering a 10-inch display, a fast and efficient Intel Atom processor, and loads of storage.

Guitar Controllers Get Girly with Aly & AJ

August 21st, 2008

Guitar Controllers Get Girly with Aly & AJ
Rock and roll is often characterized as a boy’s sport, but even from its earliest days (Wanda Jackson, anyone?) the girls have been showing they can keep up with the boys just fine, thank you very much. But the same can’t be said of the still nascent music video game market, where both games and accessories have catered strongly to the predominantly-male video game crowd. So Performance Designed Products (PDP) teams up with teen pop star sisters Aly & AJ to create two new guitar controllers aimed especially at female gamers.

One guitar features a traditional body style with a pink-and-brown look,

Denon AVR-2808CI

Denon AVR-2808CI

Its predecessor, the AVR-2807 was one of the best midrange receivers of the last couple years. The 2808CI adds digital goodies like HDMI 1.3 and 1080p upscaling, as well as the Audyssey MultiEQ XT auto-calibration system, which tailors the amp’s sound to your room acoustics. It’s a complex amp to set up, and the user guide is so-so, but when you’re finally done you’ll be rewarded with great sound and power across three independent zones. The bottom line: You can’t do better than this for around $900 USD. For a few extra bones, you can step up to the Denon’s 2809CI was recently released and adds adds a few extra inputs, including an HDMI, and Audyssey Dynamic Room EQ.

Apple Faces First iPhone 3G Suit
Alabama resident Jessica Alena Smith has become the first to file suit against Apple for sub-standard 3G performance in its new iPhone 3G. And she’s requesting her suit be granted class-action status, owing to the large number of iPhone users who are experiencing dropped calls and unreliable 3G data service from the devices.

Numerous iPhone 3G owners in the U.S. and around the world claim to be experiencing dropped calls and problems with 3G data services, even in areas where cell signals and 3G data service are reliable and readily available to other devices. Although some sources

Intel, Yahoo to Build Internet into HDTVs
At this week’s Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, Yahoo and Intel announced a new initiative aimed at building support for Web-enabled channels directly into high-definition televisions, so Internet-based content (and, no doubt, advertising) can run alongside television programming. The initiative, dubbed the “Widget Channel,” will offer a television application framework developers can use to deploy Internet-based applications designed to be viewed alongside television content. The whole thing will be powered by Yahoo’s Widget Engine, and run on Intel’s new C3100 chips, due in the first half of 2009, that are specifically
