Dell Hopes New PMPs will Challenge Apple
After letting word slip last month that it would return to manufacturing MP3 players, Dell has revealed more about its planned line of PMPs in a BusinessWeek article published on Thursday. According to the magazine, Dell will attempt to topple Apple by rallying its biggest competitors to build a more flexible system for music distribution than iTunes.
The company has rested its hopes on Zing, a software company it snapped up in a year ago

Manufacturers will do anything to put a different spin on their iPod docks – from using halo-shaped speakers to building party games into an orb. Mint’s 220 iPod speaker dock falls onto the far less gimmicky side of this spectrum by introducing a much more useful feature: wireless music streaming from a PC or Mac. Using a thumb-drive-style USB adapter, the 220 pulls music from any computer, allowing it to serve double duty as both a pair of wireless computer speakers and an iPod stereo.

Dell’s MP3 Player Move: How to Beat Apple

Last week the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that Dell was again looking at the MP3 business and that I was involved in the effort. I’ve been fascinated with the success of the iPod for some time now and the fact that even though it is very clear how Apple took the market, there has yet to emerge a truly serious competitor to Apple’s leadership. This is primarily because no one wanted to match Apple on all aspects of their program initially, and now that Apple is dominant, matching alone won’t do it anyway.
